Millions of years ago, dinosaurs rambled across the landscape of what is now Utah. Carefully preserved remains these long-dead species can be found in the Dinosaur Museum in Blanding, Utah, which makes it a terrific side trip when visiting the Southwest. The history of the world of dinosaurs is presented with skeletons, fossilized skin, eggs, footprints, and realistic sculptures, with particular focus on dinosaurs that once lived in the Four Corners region.

State-of-the-art exhibits show dinosaurs from different countries all over the world, including the Herrerasaurus from Argentina, the Plateosaurus from Germany and the Tarbosaurus from Mongolia. The exhibits also explain how these creatures were distributed across the world. You can walk under the jaws of a T-Rex and get up close to life-size adult and baby dinosaur sculptures. You’ll also be able to stand beside a giant, fossilized tree that is at least 275 million year old. Other attractions include the latest research on dinosaur skin, and the feathered dinosaur exhibit.

The egg exhibit is a great way to learn all about how baby dinosaurs are born and raised — yes, dinos did care for their babies much as modern day animals do. The first eggs were discovered in the Gobi Desert by members of the American Museum of Natural History. In the  1980s, scientists discovered evidence of parental care in nesting sites in Montana.

The museum is open from April 15 to October 15, Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is just $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for seniors and $1.00 for children. Stop by the gift shop on your way out for some amazing books about dinosaurs.

For a full day of museum visits, The Edge of the Cedars Museum State Park and Utah State University Nations of the Four Corners Cultural Center are both in Blanding as well. The vacation spots of Moab City and Arches National Park are to the north, and historic Bluff and Monument Valley are to the south.
