Located in Sante Fe, New Mexico, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is a showcase for the prolific abstract painter (in the American Modernism style) who spent nearly 40 years capturing and being inspired by New Mexico scenery.

In 1917, O’Keeffe traveled in New Mexico while on vacation. She felt such an affinity for the area that she returned every summer to paint. In 1949, she moved to New Mexico permanently and spent the next 40 years discovering the region. In the early years in New Mexico, she spent her time primarily around Taos and her paintings are influenced by the architecture, trees and landscapes in the area. By the mid-1930s, she was exploring the areas south of Taos, like Sante Fe. As it happens, she was particularly drawn to a place called Ghost Ranch. The brightly colored hills, white cliffs, the mountain known as Cerro Pedernal, the cedar and cottonwood trees and the bleached desert bones became the frequent subjects of her work through the 1940s. In fact, she even purchased a house at Ghost Ranch in 1940.

The museum offers not only many of the works by Georgia O’Keeffe on display, but frequent new exhibits by other artists in the American Modernism school of painting. In addition, there are talks, workshops, art classes, special events and much more taking place all the time at the museum. You may also tour the O’Keeffe’s home and studio. The museum store offers a wide array of gifts and wonderful artwork, clothing, jewelry, books, posters, calendars and much more.
