Fall Color in the Southwest

Fall in the Southwest can be spectacular – hillsides glowing molten gold, river bottoms in multi-colored plumage, the mountain tops with a dusting of snow. With less light, the chlorophyll breaks breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow and orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor. At the same time other chemical changes may occur, which form additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments. These changes can cloth the mountains and deserts of the southwest in a breathtaking display of natural wonder.

The tricky part is figuring out when and where in each state the leaves are changing. SeeTheSouthwest has created a general guideline for each state and has provided phone number for the Fall Color hotlines in each state. We’ve also selected our top five places to see Fall Color in each state.
