For over 50 years, visitors have been flocking to the Phoenix Art Museum. It is the largest museum for the visual arts in the southwest with 285,000 square feet, over 18,000 works of American, Asian, European, Western American, modern and contemporary art and fashion design.

Guests to the museum are attracted by the festivals, live performances, independent art films and educational programs. There is an interactive PhxArtKids gallery, the Dorrance Sculpture garden with its lush landscaping, the Museum’s restaurant Palette, and the Museum Store. In addition, guests can enjoy wonderful photography exhibitions in partnership with the Center for Creative Photography.

There are all kinds of unexpected, but neat, surprises. The display of Miniature Rooms is fascinating. This display contains replicas of houses in the United State and Europe that shows off the architecture and interior design of various periods and in various countries.

If you love Western American Art, you’ll find nearly 900 paintings, sculptures, drawing and prints that capture the flavor of Old West as well as more modern aspects.

Throughout the year, guests can experience a wide range of traveling exhibits, including photography, surrealism, graphics, fashion, cityscapes, sculptures, ancient art, costumes and more.

In addition, the museum frequently hosts special exhibits. In the past, these have included:
• Masterworks from El Greco to Picasso
• Normal Rockwell
• Chinese Imperial Palace works of art
• Rembrandt
• Steel sculptures
• Cowboy artists
• And much more

The hours can change, but in general, the museum is closed on Monday, open for 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, and Noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Because the art is delicate, temperatures inside the museum is kept to a steady 72 degrees, making it a fabulous place to cool off and enjoy the arts during the scorching summer months in Phoenix. Of course, the winter months in Phoenix are lovely, both inside and outside the museum, when daytime temperatures will range in the low 70s.
