Thanksgiving Point Institute
Have you ever wondered what the pilgrims had for their first Thanksgiving dinner? If you’d like to find out, a great place to visit is the Thanksgiving Point Institute in Lehi, Utah. Around the third week of November, just before Thanksgiving, the institute transforms its Show Barn into a 17th Century showplace, complete with the sights, sounds and smells of the pilgrim culture and the very first Thanksgiving. When you arrive, you will receive biographical information about one of the pilgrims who attended the first Thanksgiving, and then spend an evening seeing life through this person’s eyes as you take a step back into early America. Your hosts will be prominent pilgrim figures, played by actors, who wear period clothing and share customs and traditions of the time. And you will be able to savor the foods our ancestors ate at that first Thanksgiving dinner.

But there’s lots more to the Thanksgiving Point Institute than a great Thanksgiving meal — it is a quality of life, education based non-profit organization designed to offer family fun and learning … sort of like an educational theme park. Thanksgiving Point Gardens, the Children’s Discovery Garden, Farm Country, the Museum of Ancient Life, and the Emporium and restaurants offer engaging, unique experiences. So many children grow up not understanding where their food comes from, or have a true understanding of our heritage and culture. Thanksgiving Point is a great place to learn all this and much more in a fun, hands-on learning environment.

There are plenty of educational opportunities for all ages that’ll really get your hands dirty:

  • Grind and plant wheat and learn where bread comes from.
  • Explore Mineral Mound, Eco-Pond, Bear Caves and more.
  • Build dams, create flash floods and learn how the dinosaurs were fossilized.
  • Take cooking classes to learn the art of fondue, Chinese cuisine or create great chocolate delights.
  • Learn the art of gardening and become a master gardener.
  • Aspiring painters, glass artists, potters and stained glass artists are engaged in the process of learning and perfecting their craft at the Art Institute.

The Museum of Ancient Life is also located at Thanksgiving Point. It is a wonderful place to explore the world of the dinosaurs. See 60 complete dinosaur skeletons in the gallery, enjoy the 50 hands-on exhibits, and take a look at the working paleontology lab where scientists are unearthing real dinosaur bones.
