Harmel’s Ranch Resort A Colorado Dude Ranch

August 3, 2009

{openx:2}Harmel’s Ranch Resort is located in southwestern Colorado on the confluence of Spring Creek and the Taylor River in the Taylor River Canyon. At an altitude of 8,400 feet above sea level, Harmel’s offers gorgeous summer weather amidst the beauty of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

This stretch of the Taylor River is pristine and beautiful and offers some fantastic fly-fishing spots and a lovely river walk. Mountains rise on all sides, covered by amazing pine and aspen forests. It’s a perfect place to relax and listen to the wind rustle in the aspen leaves or enjoy the gentle sound of the river as it tumbles over boulders on its way to Blue Mesa Reservoir far downstream.

As one of the largest Dude Ranches in Colorado, Harmel’s offers one of the most comprehensive western saddle horse programs in the Colorado Rockies. Across from the main gate, you will find the extensive stables and tack house. Friendly wranglers greet you and assist you in preparing your horse for adventure. There is also a Junior Wrangler program as well as a stocked kid’s pond and picnic area to help your youngsters stay busy. Harmel’s prides itself on providing a mount to suit everyone from seven year olds to the most experienced rider. Beginner, intermediate and advanced trail rides leave Harmel’s three times per day, every day during the summer month. From hay rides, riding lessons to wilderness rides, Harmel’s has it all.

Harmel’s is also the center of white water rafting on the Taylor River. Taylor Reservoir up canyon sits at 10,000 feet and the river tumbles down a 16-miles stretch of canyon to Harmel’s front door. It is said to be among the fastest rivers in the continental U.S. For the less adventurous, the lower Taylor River offers gentler raft trips.

The fly-fishing opportunities on property are amazing, but if that isn’t enough, pristine stretches of Spring Creek, Spring Creek Reservoir, the Taylor River and Taylor Reservoir offer amazing action. Fed by high mountain lakes and streams, the confluence of these rivers is known as “Rainbow Heaven.” One of the largest trout in the state was caught just below the Taylor Reservoir Dam in 2008. Harmel’s offers a complete fly and tackle shop, private lessons, a guide service and equipment rental.

The Ranch can accommodate 150 guests in 37 cabins. Eighteen of the cabins have kitchenettes and some units can sleep up to nine guests. The outdoor heated swimming pool, spa and sauna are popular locations after a hard day on the trail, and Harmel’s offer massage treatments every day during the summer season. Perhaps the best news is that you don’t have to leave your pet at home. Harmel’s is pet friendly and the staff loves animals. While pets must be leashed on property, there are many nearby hiking trails where your critter can roam free!
