The town of Breckenridge maintains much of its Old West charm from its early days as a mining town. In 1859, prospectors discovered gold along the Blue River. A small community sprang up to support the miners. One of the largest nuggets of gold ever discovered was found here. Called “Tom’s Baby,” this 13.5 pound gold nugget was discovered near Breckenridge by local miners Tom Graves and Harry Lytton. Tom’s Baby is now on display at the Colorado Museum of Natural History in Denver.

Today, the town contains more than 350 historic structures that retain their lovely Victorian charm. Among these structures is the infamous Gold Pan Saloon. Established in the early days of the town, this rough-and-tumble bar was a favorite of the miners. Today, the Gold Pan is still in business at 103 North Main Street in Breckenridge and stands proud as the oldest continuously operated bar West of the Mississippi.
