Located on the central Rio Grande River flyway, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is a fun place to view the thousands of birds (dozens of species) that migrate south for the winter. The park is home to Canadian geese, Sandhill Cranes and various species of ducks and other waterfowl.

The 4,300-acre Rio Grande Nature Center State Park extends from Sandia Pueblo in the north through Albuquerque and south to Isleta Pueblo. Large cottonwood trees, coyote willow and New Mexico olive trees create a cool, shady forest and provide habitat for beaver, numerous bird species, turtles and snakes.

The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park has a terrific trail system along the Rio Grande. The bosque, a cottonwood riverside forest, features three miles of nature trails, which wind through the bosque and alongside the river. Along with the wintering birds, you might even see coyotes, raccoon or beaver.

The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park offers naturalist-led hikes, exploration trips to the bosque, exhibits, hands-on activities, teacher workshops, seasonal classes and special events for visitors of all ages. Just one of the many adventures you can experience is the Moon Walk. Under the light of the full moon, the bosque comes alive with a cast of characters not seen during the day. Led by volunteer naturalists and Nature Center staff members, you will listen for owls, watch for coyotes, and enjoy the peace and solitude of these quiet walks.

Many people feel the highlight of the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is its glass-walled library, which provides a unique opportunity to view bosque birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. A speaker system transmits the real sounds of pond life into the room.

At any time of year, the park offer terrific recreational opportunities. Low-impact recreation such as hiking, bicycling, mountain biking, in-line skating and horseback riding is allowed on the Paseo del Bosque paved trail or the natural surface trail beneath the cottonwood trees in the park.
