Glendale Glitters is an annual holiday festival held on Friday and Saturday nights at Murphy Park and the Glendale Visitors Center in Historic Downtown Glendale, Arizona. With more than 1.5 million multi-colored lights that cover 12 historic blocks of downtown Glendale, this is a holiday spectacular you won’t want to miss. More than 50,000 people attend the event yearly!
The lights twinkle nightly from 6 – 10 p.m. during the week, but Fridays and Saturdays are when the real fun happens. Many of the specialty shops and restaurants extend their hours and each weekend in December usually has a special theme — in 2009 you will have fun with Gingerbread Nights, Spirit of Giving, and Jingle Bell Rockin’ Nights.
Your children will love the Children’s Wonderland that includes a little-tikes snowfield and the highlight of their stay will be a visit with Santa. Specialty shops and holiday craft vendors are on hand to offer great Christmas present solutions and hands-on activities. If you just want to enjoy the scenery, take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage to see the sights and listen to the holiday choirs sing on the street corners or watch the holiday entertainers perform. When you need to stop for fuel, a food court and local restaurants offer tasty holiday treats.
The night the lights go out, usually about the middle of January, the downtown area throws a monster block party to close out the season. You can enjoy live music, street performers, singing and dancing and hot air balloons.
Glendale Glitters is a free event, and so is the parking (around 2,000 parking spots available within a 10-minute walk of the event). Free shuttles will run from the Glendale Community College parking lot, at 59th and Olive Avenues, between 4 and 10:30 p.m.
You can visit the City of Glendale online or call 623-930-4500 for more information on Glendale Glitters.
