Ski Taos
Taos Ski Valley is one of the most popular places to ski in New Mexico! With more than 300 days of sunshine and over 300 inches of snow each winter, Taos Ski Valley offers fantastic skiing and winter sports as well as stunning views. It is also one of the few family owned and operated ski resorts in the country. Descendants of the founder still personally run the mountain and take a deep interest in the ski experience you will have when you visit.

In the 1950s, Ernie Blake was manager of the Santa Fe Ski Basin, but his dream was to own his own ski area. As a Cessna pilot, Ernie began flying over Colorado and New Mexico, searching until he found the perfect location — the big snow basin north of Wheeler Peak. And so Taos Ski Valley was born! It started with only one run, now known as Snakedance.

Today, Taos Mountain has more than 1,294 acres and 110 trails, more than half of which are for expert skiers only. But don’t worry beginners and intermediate skiers will find plenty to keep them happy. There are 13 chair lifts — 4 quads, 1 triple, 5 double and three surface lifts. The base of the mountain sits at 9, 207 feet, while the highest lift goes to 11,819 feet.

Taos was included in the rankings in Ski Magazine’s 2008 Top 50 Resort Guide. In addition, two of Taos Ski Valley employees (Robert Scram and Christine Lowry) won the Best Ski Patroller and Best Ski Instructor categories in the prestigious “Best of the Best” competition in 2009. More than 2,500 individuals from 10 New Mexico ski resort competed for these awards. You can be sure you are in good hands when you visit Taos.

If you travel to Taos in January, you can also participate in the Annual Wine Festival. 2010 marks the 24th year of this festival, which usually takes place the third week in January. You can attend seminars with knowledgeable experts, enjoy exquisite dinners where chefs will pair outstanding cuisine with the perfect wine, and enjoy the grand tastings, where chefs from all over the area join in to provide signature appetizers to pair with reserve wines from dozens of participating wineries.

A wide variety of lodging is available in the area — from the lodge, to condos, cabins, resorts, motel and hotel rooms and bed & breakfast locations. There are plenty of shops in the area to keep you in winter sports gear and there are plenty of restaurants to help you fuel up to hit the slopes.
